30 day challenge 1 gallon of water

JANUARY 2015 CHALLENGE: Drink 1 gallon (128 oz) of water every day

It’s no secret that drinking water is essential to our health, and proper hydration leads to healthier, brighter skin; improves your immune system; encourages optimum organ function; boosts energy; controls calorie intake; and a host of other wonderful whole-body benefits. Still, millions of people are chronically dehydrated daily and experience preventable ailments as a result.

That’s why between New Year’s Day and January 30th at 11:55PM EST, we’re challenging you (and ourselves!) to drink a gallon of water every day. It may seem like a hefty undertaking, but when you break it down into manageable steps, it’s roughly one 8oz glass every hour you’re awake, assuming you sleep the average 8 hours a night.

For every day you complete the challenge of drinking one gallon of pure or flavored water (see acceptable flavoring below), snap a photo and share it on Facebook, Twitter and/or Instagram using the hashtag #gallonaday and tagging Travel Well Magazine (@travelwellmag on Twitter and Instagram.) Teas, sodas, juices and other non water beverages do not count.

Each contestant can enter once per day on each of the three social networks for a total of 3 entries per day, up to 90 total entries for the 30-day challenge. You are welcome and encouraged to post on each network about the challenge more than once a day (we’d love to see your progress!) but only one post per network will count toward your entry total. On January 31st, qualifying entries will be chosen from at random and the winner will be announced via the Travel Well Facebook page, so be sure to like the page and follow us there.

Note: We’re on the honor system here, so please be true and honest to yourself and your fellow challengers. If you don’t complete the challenge for a given day, do not post that you did, but do make a promise to yourself to do better the next day!

Our advice for accomplishing a #gallonaday:

DON’T complete the challenge using disposable water bottles! This will create a huge amount of plastic waste.

DO use a glass, reusable water bottle or even just a gallon jug that can be refilled and recycled once it’s time to toss it.

DON’T try to chug most of the gallon at one time.

DO spread it out throughout the day at roughly 8oz every hour. Set alerts on your phone, computer or watch and place notes in your high-traffic areas to remind yourself as often as needed.

DON’T estimate the amount you’ve had.

DO track your progress! Tally every glass or bottle fill-up in an app, in your planner, on a sticky note or wherever works best for you.

DON’T get discouraged! A gallon is a lot, especially if you’re not used to drinking water often. That’s why it’s a challenge!

DO try your best. Even if you only drink half a gallon, you’ve consumed the recommended daily amount of water. Forgive yourself for the days you don’t reach the goal, and simply try to drink more with each day until drinking a full gallon is no big deal. All progress is good and worthwhile!

DON’T get bored or count anything besides straight up water in your tally. Sodas, teas, coffees, juices and any other non-water beverages do not count.

DO make water more enjoyable to drink by flavoring it with fresh fruit slices or all-natural sugar-free flavor packets. These are the only exceptions to the pure water rule.
